And Jehu went, and Jehonadab the son of Rechab, into the house of Baal, and said unto the worshippers of Baal, Search, and look that there be here with you none of the servants of the LORD, but the worshippers of Baal only.
Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab went into the temple of Baal and said to the Baal worshippers, 'Search carefully and make sure that only worshippers of Baal are here with you, no servants of the LORD should be among you.'
Jehu is making sure only Baal worshippers are gathered in the temple before he carries out his plan to destroy them all.
📚 Historical Context
In the 9th century BC, during the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah, the northern kingdom of Israel was deeply influenced by idolatry, particularly the worship of Baal, which had been aggressively promoted by King Ahab and his wife Jezebel. Jehu, a military commander anointed by the prophet Elisha to become king, was carrying out God's judgment by violently purging the royal family of Ahab and the followers of Baal to restore loyalty to the Lord. In this verse, Jehu enters the temple of Baal with Jehonadab, a leader known for his opposition to idolatry, to ensure that only pure Baal worshipers are present, setting the stage for his planned massacre.
